When a health industry not-for-profit began the hunt for a new headquarters, the firm was selected to bring this new beginning to life thanks to our quirky, yet practical, design concept. A 1600m2 workspace designed around the human heart – the perfect organ to inspire connectivity, passion and purpose. Employees are greeted at the entrance to the Melbourne headquarters by our custom-created heart-shaped 3D feature tapestry. The differing materials and textures of the heart were inspired by Australian indigenous culture – with Aboriginal people being a major client of the organisation. The various patterns on the tapestry also represent the diversity among employees and stakeholders, who come from all different backgrounds. This acts as a way to build a sense of community and inspiration among users, both now and into the future. This focus on textiles at office entry created a need to source the highest standard flooring for the remainder of the workplace. Coverings that would complement the entrance and accentuate the passages of the heart that unfold as you enter the ‘chamber’ – the main work area. Shaw Contract’s Hexagon tile carpet is used to interchange vibrant colours that replace pockets of the existing carpet in DNA sequences throughout the work area – signalling a link between the old and new workplaces and continuing to create an exciting work environment. Located in a Green Start Building in Melbourne, sustainability and WELL Building Standards were key drivers of the design intent and selection of products for this workspace transformation. The use of Green Star Certified carpets from Shaw Contract created pathways to key areas within the workspace where employees can take a break, collaborate with other team members or work autonomously in designated quite zones. With its bright, open main work floor, coupled with sophisticated break out-nooks and multi-use meeting spaces, this new office provides a truly inspirational space for visitors and clients alike.
The human heart plays many different vital roles to keep each of us healthy and thriving – and this heart-inspired office delivery also achieves just that. Flexibility is a key feature of this new and improved corporate headquarters, where employees are encouraged to use every crevice to meet their needs. Colourful breakout spaces reign – turning otherwise disused corners and walls into key places for informal meetings, quiet work zones or places to take a quick rest. A highlight is our large custom-made booth seat, shaped like a heart vessel and set in a nook with a digital screen – the perfect place to conference call or small team meeting. This mix of collaboration areas, private zones and multi-use spaces puts employee needs at the heart of this delivery. With all of this versatility on offer, bringing an element of coherence and direction into the design was key – an important way to inspire employees to strive for clear organisational goals. Shaw Contract’s Hexagon tile carpet is the pin that holds this design piece together. Laid in a DNA-inspired sequence, the tile provides employees with a natural flow and sense of unified purpose and direction. It acts as a clear signal to staff: This organisation does not mind where you set up your workstation for the day or where and how you decide to collaborate, but we all share the same goals and we are all working to achieving them together.
