The entire space was a refit of the existing office above David Jones in Chadstone Shopping Centre. There were some details pertaining to ceilings, bulkheads, services and a central dome (that acts as a light well to the David Jones central elevators) that we looked to integrate into the new design to reduce wastage, timeline or projects and costs. From a business sense, the space houses over 800 co-workers when at capacity, made up of communal spaces, meeting rooms, hot desks and serviced offices. Achieving those numbers are critically important to maintain a profitable co-working model.
We re-used existing materials wherever we could, we re-purposed existing stone, lighting, bulkheads and mechanical throughout and seamlessly integrated them to the new design. We took the ‘David Jones Dome’ and built a central courtyard into the space, that lets light flow right through the office, and provides an incredible break out of after work drinks space. In regards to meeting the ‘commercial brief’ for the space – we worked closely with the client and the finance team to ensure that the numbers stacked up, regarding attainable rents for spaces, but still ensuring there was ample and diverse meeting and communal areas.
