The client’s goal for their Rochester location was to be the best employer in the town. Taking up residence in the newly reformed The Metropolitan building, this allowed the client to reinvent their work environment with 360 degree views of downtown Rochester. Datto has maintained a partnership with RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) and draws from the incredibly technical talent at RIT. Project goals included completion in 2018 to take advantage of the graduating class which represented the first years of the iGen generation. The design team capitalized on this by designing spaces that would be attractive to the younger generation workforce, and pushing the boundaries of what an office can be. Their current space expands over 5 floors, and to make it fast (and fun) to get to an impromptu meeting on other floors, there is a steel spiral slide next to the interconnecting stair. There are traditional spaces for working and there are non-traditional spaces for playing. Like a large Lite-Brite wall and container video game niche.
During the design phase, the client expressed a balance of spaces and good flow. The design team addressed the feel of the spaces with color and warm accents, punctuated by Honeycomb pattern carpets, by Shaw, defining space types.
