10 years after designing the client’s offices during the initial network launch, the design firm returned to redesign 35,000 SF of interiors for the client’s main offices in Burbank. The unique challenge was to develop creative solutions to make the space current, while being sensitive to the environment by keeping much of the existing conditions, offices and workstations in place, not impacting the business in any way. Phasing each step of the process was highly critical in the successful implementation of the design. A preserved moss art installation creates a sense of vitality, and can be seen through a partially obscured glass wall in the lobby. Behind the reception desk, an oversized impactful logo of the client’s brand adorns the barkwood-encased-in-glass wall, while new large monitors feature shows of the client, and movie posters display their Titles. Existing cowhide lobby chairs are refreshed with new brightly colored accent pillows and beautifully faceted details including polished chrome and glass coffee tables and a massive, stunning 12’-0” long linear suspension light fixture overhead. Replacing the tired broadloom carpet with Shaw’s gorgeous “Plain Weave Tile” in Natural Silk with hints of copper, along with rich charcoal accent walls, and walnut veneer feature walls, creates an instant air of sophistication. Concealed behind the walnut veneer are thin sheets of metal, allowing for cleverly placed magnetic and changeable client slogans on the veneer walls, highlighted by beautiful architectural light fixtures throughout to enhance the user experience. Initially hesitant to use carpet tile in their space, the end user is over-the-moon happy with the final design. Happy Client = Happy Designer!

The carpet was a critical component in the success of the overall design. We initially installed a woven carpet (by another carpet manufacturer), which, due to poor installation, became fraught with issues. The client was tempted to reinstall the same woven carpet again, but instead, agreed to carpet tile when they fell in love with Shaw’s Plain Weave Tile, which we all agreed would be a better solution for the space. After phasing the reinstallation of the carpet over 4 weekends (after months of initial weekend construction), the project was complete. And the client is BEYOND THRILLED with the results. The copper accents in the Natural Silk color palette blended beautifully with the walnut veneer walls, and rich charcoal accents. The equally clever solution of using powerful magnets so the client slogans could be changeable was a huge design win for the team. As marketing comes up with new phrases, the slogans are easily swapped out for new ones, allowing the space to be fluid, continually changing with the times, and always keeping current.
