The Centre was a joint venture project with Grande Prairie Regional College, Agriculture Canada and the Province of Alberta for the design and construction of a Centre for Excellence. This project includes Level 1 and Level 2 lab space with a supporting mobile office suite designed to meet the functional requirements of multiple user groups. One of the major challenges was to create a space that suited both Agriculture Canada and Grand Prairie Regional College’s functional programs. The second challenge was the geographical location of the building; located amongst the picturesque canola fields of northern Alberta, we had to ensure the interior finishes met the durability and longevity requirements of foot traffic entering the building in a rural environment.
To meet all program requirements, we worked collaboratively with user groups to develop a mobile workplace strategy that provides a variety of flexible open and closed work spaces, unassigned touch down areas and multi-purpose collaborative space. Ultimately, this strategy allowed the client to reduce the overall supporting office area and, in turn, allow for more lab space to meet the critical needs of the scientists. Rather than looking at the rural setting as a challenge, we embraced the beauty of this natural bee habitat and incorporated large-scale graphics captured by a local photographer. Shaw Flooring had the perfect LVT and carpet tile offering to support the durability and longevity requirements, all while enhancing our design vision.
